Description
Monteverdi's and Striggio's "L'Orfeo" is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, and tells the story of his decent to Hades and his fruitless attempt to bring his bride Eurydice back to the living world. Originally written for a court performance during Carnival in mantua, Italy in 1609, it is among the earliest Italian operas to be written.
